Origins
The past few weeks I’ve been obsessing over a crochet flower stitch motif I found on Pinterest. I played around with it, and came up another pattern for a slouchy market bag crocheted in the round. There are a few differences between the motif used in that pattern and the one here – I’ve evened out all the chains to chain 3s and eliminated many of the petal lock stitches.
It’s a cute bag, great for holding a yoga mat, and I’m proud of what I came up with, but I wasn’t quite satisfied with the handles and the top. I kept searching online and on Pinterest for something different, and came across the Lola Market Bag by MotherBunch Crochet:
It’s a great pattern, and I highly recommend checking out the instructions on the MotherBunch Crochet website. The video tutorials are fantastic! I learned how to do a new stitch, the foundational single crochet, and it totally rocked my world. The videos will give you a good idea of how the bag goes together.
This pattern is essentially structurally the same, but instead of the basic 3-triple-crochet granny square, the granny square here is done in the flower stitch motif. I also worked my gathering a little differently because I wanted more rounds and fewer rows, but that’s mostly because I’m bad at working rows, and I found rounds easier to manage.
I hope I provide enough added value to warrant writing out a new pattern, but definitely check out the MotherBunch Crochet website – she has several market bag patterns and great video tutorials, in a wonderful, soothing Australian accent that I could listen to all day!
Pattern Tutorial
Overview
This bag is crocheted mostly in the round, with a few gather rows that are worked back and forth.
I provide instructions for 3 different sizes, but it’s a very flexible pattern that can be reduced or enlarged to taste. Where applicable, I list the small bag measurements/stitch counts first, followed by medium and large in parentheses: small (medium; large). For some rows and rounds I split the instructions by size.
I start the tutorial with instructions on the different stitch and motif building blocks. The flower motif is constructed in two rounds. The first/bottom round is “A” and the second/top round is “B.”
Don’t get hung up on all the stitches before getting started. It’s all at the beginning so I don’t have to keep typing the same instructions over and over. In the first few rounds I’ve typed out the instructions, but in later rounds I use the abbreviations.
Materials
Size J crochet hook
3 (4; 5) skeins Lily Cotton “Sugar ‘n’ Cream” yarn
Stitches
I haven’t made a video for how to make this bag, but I use the same flower stitch in my Flower Stitch Poncho pattern:
The poncho starts with a ring of foundation single crochets, but at 9 minutes I start using the same stitches used in this pattern, beginning with a Round A Start, followed by a Flower Motif A.
The video won’t show you how to start the bag, but it’s worth watching to get an idea of how the pieces fit together. I do include a LOT of step by step pictures in this article, including many for how to get the first few rounds started! Just keep scrolling.
V Stitch A (VSA)
In the next chain 3 space: triple crochet, chain 3, triple crochet.
All VSAs will be always be worked in the chain 3 space between petals 5 and 6 of Flower Motif B.
Corner V Stitch A (CVA)
In the next chain 3 space: V Stitch A, chain 3, V stitch A.
All CVAs will be worked in the third (middle) chain 3 space of the Corner V Stitch Bs (CVBs).
V Stitch B (VSB)
Chain 3, single crochet into the next chain 3 space, chain 3.
The single crochet of VSB is always worked into the chain 3 space of the VSA of the
Corner V Stitch B (CVB)
Work the following: V Stitch B; single crochet in the next chain 3 space, chain 3, single crochet in the same chain 3 space; V Stitch B.
CVBs are always worked into the chain 3 spaces created by a CVA.
Unfinished Triple Crochet (UTC)
This is worked exactly the same as a triple crochet, except instead of yarning over and drawing through two loops 3 times, we only do it twice, and the last loop stays on the hook until we’re ready to finish off the petal cluster(s).
Unfinished Triple Crochet:
- Yarn over twice, insert the hook where you want the stitch,
- Yarn over and draw up a loop,
- Yarn over and pull through two loops,
- Yarn over and pull through two loops again.
You should now have two loops on your hook and you’re ready to start the next UTC or finish off the cluster as applicable.
Here’s step by step pictures for 1 unfinished triple crochet:
And here’s step by step pictures for a second unfinished triple crochet immediately after the first one:
My charting software does not have a specific symbol for an unfinished triple crochet, so I indicate them with triple crochets joined by an arch or a circle.
Flower Motif A (FMA)
Petal 1: Chain 3 (counts as unfinished triple crochet). In the top of the last triple crochet, work 2 unfinished triple crochets. You will have 3 loops on your hook.
Petal 2: In the next chain 3 space, work 3 unfinished triple crochets. You will have 6 loops on your hook.
Petal 3: In the next chain 3 space, work 3 unfinished triple crochets. You will have 9 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops to join petals 1, 2, and 3. Chain 1 (lock stitch).
Petal 4: Chain 3 (counts as unfinished triple crochet). Work two unfinished triple crochets into the chain 1 lock stitch. You will have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Flower Motif B (FMB)
Petal 5: Work 3 unfinished triple crochets into the Flower Motif A lock stitch. You will have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. Chain 3.
Petal 6: Work 3 unfinished triple crochets into the same lock stitch. You will have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.
Starts and Joins
All A rounds start and end in the middle of a Corner V Stitch A (CVA) and all B rounds start and end in the middle of a Corner V Stitch B (CVB). Joining in the right way eliminates the need for slipping stitches or starting in the middle of a flower motif, which is messier.
I’ve grouped all the starts and joins into one chart, pictured here, then I describe each in more detail below, with more pictures. The stitches are distinguished by color in the charts. To follow, start at the four pointed star and end at the five pointed star.
After every Round A Join, move on to a Round B Start. After every Round B Join, move on the a Round A Start.
Round A Start (RAS)
All “A” rounds start with the second half of a Corner V Stitch A (CVA):
Chain 6 (counts as a triple crochet + chain 3), triple crochet into the same space.
Round A Join
All “A” rounds end completing the first half of the Corner V Stitch A (CVA) that started the round:
In the same space that you started the round, V Stitch A (triple crochet, chain 3, triple crochet). Then, instead of chain 3 like you would do in a normal CVA, join with: chain 2, then single crochet into the middle of the chain 6 that started the round.
Round B Start (RBS)
All “B” rounds start with the second half of a Corner V Stitch B (CVB):
Chain 1, single crochet into the same space (draw up a loop around the single crochet that joins the previous round). Then V Stitch B (chain 3, single crochet into the next chain 3 space, chain 3).
Round B Join (RBJ)
All “B” rounds end completing the first half of the Corner V Stitch B (CVB) that started the round:
V Stitch B (chain 3, single crochet into the next chain 3 space, chain 3). Single crochet into the next space, which is the same space that you started the round in. Then, instead of chain 3 like you would do in a normal CVB, join with: chain 1, then double crochet into the first single crochet of the round.
The final B round before the gather rows is the only exception to this pattern. Instead of joining with “chain 1, then double crochet into the first single crochet of the round,” instead work:
Chain 2, single crochet into the first single crochet of the round.
Other Abbreviations
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = triple crochet
ch = chain
yo = yarn over
Granny Square Rounds
Round 1
6 sc into a magic ring. Slip stitch into the first sc.
If you don’t know how to make a magic ring, also called an adjustable ring, follow the link! It’s amazing!
Round 2
Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). Into the same sc work: dc + ch 1.
In the next sc work: dc + ch 3, dc + ch 1.
In the next (third) sc work: dc + ch 1, dc + ch 3.
In the next (fourth) sc work: dc + ch 1, dc + ch 1.
In the next (fifth) sc work: dc + ch 3, dc + ch 1.
In the next (sixth and last) sc work: dc + ch 1; dc + ch 1. Then to join, dc into the third chain of the chain 4 that started the round.
Round A 1
Round A Start: ch 6 (counts as tr + ch 3), tr into the same space.
Next work a modified Flower Motif A (FMA). It’s essentially the same as a regular FMA, except that petals 2 and 3 are worked into the chain 1 spaces of the previous round instead of chain 3 spaces like they will be in successive rounds.
Here’s how to start petal 1:
Now for the rest of the modified Flower Motif A:
m
*CVA, modified FMA.* Repeat from * to * 3 times total.
Here’s how the round will look as it builds up:
You will have made 4 flowers and it’s time for the Round A Join: in the same space that you started the round, start a CVA (tr, ch 3, tr). Then, instead of ch 3 like you would in a normal CVA, join with: ch 2, then sc into the middle of the ch 6 that started the round.
Turns out I messed up when I was making this bag and did a ch 1 + dc instead of a ch 2 + sc, so what’s pictured isn’t correct, but I include the pictures anyway, because I think they’re still useful. But just know the pictures don’t match what you should be doing. Sorry!
Round B 1
Round B Start: ch 1, sc into the same space (draw up a loop around the sc that joined the previous A round). Then V Stitch B (ch 3, sc into the next ch 3 space, ch 3).
FMB. *CVB, FMB.* Repeat from * to * 3 times total.
Here’s how the round will look as it builds up:
This completes 4 flower motifs and it’s time for the Round B Join: VSB (ch 3, sc into the next ch 3 space, ch 3). Sc into the next space, which is the same space that you started the round in. Ch 1, dc into first sc of the round.
For detailed pictures of a Round B Join, see the Stitches section.
Round A 2
RAS, FMA, VSA, FMA. *CVA, FMA, VSA, FMA.* Repeat from * to * 3 times total. RAJ.
Round B 2
RBS, FMB, VSB, FMB. *CVB, FMB, VSB, FMB.* Repeat from * to * 3 times total. RBJ.
At the end of Round B 2, each side of the square has 2 completed flower motifs.
Round A 3
RAS, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA. *CVA, FMA, VSA. FMA, VSA, FMA.* Repeat from * to * 3 times total. RAJ.
Round B 3
RBS, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB. *CVB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB.* Repeat from * to * around 3 times total. RBJ.
Round A 4
RAS, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA. *CVA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA.* Repeat from * to * across 3 times total. RAJ.
Round B 4
RBS, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB. *CVB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB.* Repeat from * to * around 3 times total. RBJ.
At the end of this round, each side of the square will have 4 full flower motifs.
If you are making the medium or large bag, continue to Round A 5.
If you are making the small bag, make the Final Round B Join, where instead of “chain 1 + dc” into the first crochet of the round, work “ch 2 +sc.” Then skip to the Gathering Rows and Rounds section.
Round A 5
RAS, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA. *CVA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA.* Repeat from * to * 3 times total around. RAJ.
Round B 5
RBS, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB. *CVB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB.* Repeat from * to * around 3 times total. RBJ.
At the end of this round, each side of the square will have 5 full flower motifs.
If you are making the large bag, continue to Round A 6.
If you are making the medium bag, make the Final Round B Join, where instead of “chain 1 + dc” into the first crochet of the round, work “ch 2 + sc.” Then skip to the Gathering Rows and Rounds section.
Round A 6
RAS, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA. *CVA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA, VSA, FMA.* Repeat from * to * 3 times total. RAJ.
Round B 6
RBS, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB. *CVB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB, VSB, FMB.* Repeat from * to * around 3 times total. Final Round B Join.
At the end of this round, each side of the square will have 6 full flower motifs. For the large bag, it’s time to continue on to the Gathering Rows and Rounds section.
You can continue making the square bigger by working in the same pattern, increasing by 1 flower motif on each side, if you wish, but you will have to work out the decreases in the gathering rows and rounds for yourself.
